Built in 1820-21, St Paul's Church, Shadwell, was designed by John Walters and built by R. Streather. Walters had been a pupil of D.A. Alexander, architect of many buildings in the London Docks. Walters died just as the church was completed. The church replaced a chapel built in 1656. The chuch was the parish church of Captain James Cook who lived nearby from 1763 until 1765; his son, James, was baptised in the church in 1763.
