Newlands Quay reflected in
Shadwell Basin.
Three sides of Shadwell Basin are
largely taken up by a postmodern style housing
development designed by MacCormac, Jamieson, Pritchard
& Wright for Sanctuary Housing Association. The
development was completed in 1987 and has been much
admired both for its suitability for the site and its
unusual style.
The development by Sanctuary Housing
Association is split into five groups of dwellings. At
the eastern end of the Basin is a set of freehold
semi-detached houses which back onto Peartree Lane and
Glamis Road. Separated from these by St Paul's church is
Newlands Quay, a five storey block of leasehold flats. At
the Western end of the dock is another similar block of
flats, Maynards Quay, which backs onto Garnet Street.
Accross the Garnet Street bascule bridge and to the
south-west of the basin is Benson Quay which similar in
design to the other two block but which provides rented
accommodation. Behind Benson Quay to the east is another
group of semi-detached houses. Newlands, Maynards and
Benson Quay are administered and maintained by Sanctuary
Housing Association.
Despite the easy access from the
dockside, it is perhaps appropriate to bear in mind that
the area on the dock side of the flats from the raised
kerb, and the whole parking and service area on the entry
side the flats is private property.
On the southern side of the basin runs
Milk Yard which is mainly a service road for Riverside
Mansions, a much older post-war development of duplex
flats. At the end of Milk Yard and facing directly onto
the Basin is, the Monza Building, a new block of luxury
flats of some features of architectural merit
